EDG Home Rumbler

Are you a fan of tactical shotguns but working with a tight budget? No problem—we’ve got you covered. In this build, we’re transforming a pile of Mossberg 500 parts into a tactical powerhouse, the Home Rumbler DIY Tactical Mossberg 500 Build.

Whether you’ve got spare parts lying around or you’re looking to upgrade your existing shotgun, this guide will walk you through the process step-by-step. Let’s get started.

The Starting Point – A Pile of Mossberg 500 Parts and the future DIY Tactical Mossberg 500 Build

This build started with a great deal from a local gun dealer—an assortment of Mossberg 500 parts, including:

  • One complete Mossberg 500 shotgun
  • Enough extra parts to almost build two additional shotguns

Rather than simply reassembling the gun as-is, we decided to refinish and upgrade nearly everything.

Upgrading the Mossberg 500 – Parts & Mods

No tactical shotgun is complete without key upgrades. Here’s what we added:

Refinishing with Cerakote – Custom Color Scheme

To give the shotgun a custom tactical look, we went all-in with Cerakote refinishing:

  • Base Colors: Desert Sand & Flat Dark Earth
  • Accents: Black

This three-tone scheme not only looks great but also adds durability to the firearm.

Assembly – Step-by-Step and the Birth of a DIY Tactical Mossberg 500 Build

Step 1: Prepping the Receiver & Barrel

Before applying Cerakote, the receiver and barrel went through:
Degreasing
Sandblasting
Gas-out Process

Once everything was refinished, it was time to start the build.

Step 2: Handguard Installation

Installing the Strike Industries VOA Handguard was a straightforward process:

  • Aligned the cutout with the action arms
  • Slid the handguard into place
  • Used the provided handguard tool to secure the nut

Step 3: Installing the Tactaload Flash 5 Stock

The Tactaload Flash 5 was an essential upgrade. This stock allows you to store five extra shells in the buttstock for fast reloads.

Installation Steps:

  1. Removed the magazine tube
  2. Inserted the extra-long buttstock screw (provided with the stock)
  3. Reattached the magazine tube

Step 4: Safety & Follower Upgrades

Two critical Mossberg 500 upgrades:

  • NDZ Tactical Safety (Buy here) – The stock safety switch is terrible, so this bright red replacement adds both functionality and visibility.
  • Strike Industries Magazine Follower – Improves feeding reliability and adds a visual indicator when the magazine is empty.

Step 5: Trigger Assembly & Rails

Reassembling the trigger was a complex process, but it followed the standard Mossberg 500 field strip procedure.

For the optics, we skipped drilling and tapping and instead mounted a UTG Full Rail, secured with the ejector screw and trigger pin.

This rail makes it easy to mount red dots or scopes without any permanent modifications to the receiver.

Final Touches & Range Testing the DIY Tactical Mossberg 500 Build

With the build complete, we added:
Red Model Paint – Restored the safety dot for better visibility
Red Dot Sight – Mounted and zeroed using the Gideon Optics Red Dot
Optional Shell Carrier – More ammo on hand

This Gideon Optics red dot performed great at the range, offering a clear, fast sight picture and excellent durability for a budget-friendly price.

Performance at the Range

The Home Rumbler performed flawlessly:

  • Smooth cycling thanks to the polished bolt & bolt slide
  • Improved ergonomics with the VOA handguard & Tactaload stock
  • Faster reloads due to the follower & stock shell storage

Final Thoughts – A Budget Tactical Beast

Building a budget-friendly tactical shotgun doesn’t mean cutting corners. With the right refinements, even salvaged parts can be turned into a custom home-defense powerhouse.
