Are you a fan of tactical shotguns but working with a tight budget? No problem—we’ve got you covered. In this build, we’re transforming a pile of Mossberg 500 parts into a tactical powerhouse, the Home Rumbler DIY Tactical Mossberg 500 Build.
Whether you’ve got spare parts lying around or you’re looking to upgrade your existing shotgun, this guide will walk you through the process step-by-step. Let’s get started.
This build started with a great deal from a local gun dealer—an assortment of Mossberg 500 parts, including:
Rather than simply reassembling the gun as-is, we decided to refinish and upgrade nearly everything.
No tactical shotgun is complete without key upgrades. Here’s what we added:
To give the shotgun a custom tactical look, we went all-in with Cerakote refinishing:
This three-tone scheme not only looks great but also adds durability to the firearm.
Before applying Cerakote, the receiver and barrel went through:
✔ Degreasing
✔ Sandblasting
✔ Gas-out Process
Once everything was refinished, it was time to start the build.
Installing the Strike Industries VOA Handguard was a straightforward process:
The Tactaload Flash 5 was an essential upgrade. This stock allows you to store five extra shells in the buttstock for fast reloads.
Installation Steps:
Two critical Mossberg 500 upgrades:
Reassembling the trigger was a complex process, but it followed the standard Mossberg 500 field strip procedure.
For the optics, we skipped drilling and tapping and instead mounted a UTG Full Rail, secured with the ejector screw and trigger pin.
This rail makes it easy to mount red dots or scopes without any permanent modifications to the receiver.
With the build complete, we added:
✔ Red Model Paint – Restored the safety dot for better visibility
✔ Red Dot Sight – Mounted and zeroed using the Gideon Optics Red Dot
✔ Optional Shell Carrier – More ammo on hand
This Gideon Optics red dot performed great at the range, offering a clear, fast sight picture and excellent durability for a budget-friendly price.
The Home Rumbler performed flawlessly:
Building a budget-friendly tactical shotgun doesn’t mean cutting corners. With the right refinements, even salvaged parts can be turned into a custom home-defense powerhouse.
