Attempting an Impossible 2000-Yard Shot with My .308!

In this video

Have you ever had that one day when you finally decided to tackle something big? For me, it was trying my hand at long-range shooting in Montana—an experience filled with nerves, excitement, and, spoiler alert: a whole lot of laughter. After months of planning and savings for my custom-built rifle, the moment had arrived to see if all the work would pay off. If you’ve ever felt the butterflies before a big challenge, then you know exactly how I felt.

Setting the Scene: Why Montana?

Have you ever stood in a place that took your breath away? That’s how I felt as I step into the vast and beautiful landscapes of Montana. The rolling hills, the endless skies, and the rich wilderness create a setting that is nothing short of magical. It’s a place that inspires adventure and challenges, making it the perfect backdrop for my shooting experiences.

The Beauty and Vastness of Montana’s Landscapes

Montana is a canvas painted with stunning scenes. From the rugged mountains to the serene valleys, there’s beauty around every corner. This natural splendor offers a sense of freedom. You feel alive here!

  • Endless Sky: There’s something about looking up at a sky that feels truly infinite.
  • Rolling Hills: Each hill offers a new perspective, inviting exploration.
  • Wildlife: The untamed nature surrounds you, adding to the thrill.

The Thrill of Shooting in an Untamed Environment

Shooting in such a raw, untouched landscape brings an adrenaline rush. The thrill of engaging your target while knowing the vastness that lies beyond is exhilarating. It makes you feel connected to nature, and lets you harness its energy. I often find myself asking, “Can I hit that distant target?”

Conquering Long-Distance Targets

When I made the decision to tackle long-distance shooting, it felt daunting. I never really tried it until I came to Montana, and even then it took almost 2 decades.

The Anticipation of Being Outdoors

There’s an electric feeling when you’re outdoors. It’s less about the act of shooting and more about immersing yourself in nature. Each time I step outside, I feel the excitement bubbling. How can you not feel invigorated by the fresh air and natural surroundings?

In Montana, the adventure goes beyond shooting. It’s about embracing the moment. The thrill comes not only from the shots fired but from the breathtaking environment that surrounds me. I cherish these experiences—each shot offers a story. I’ll never forget the joy of hitting that target after all the anticipation!

The Build-Up: My Custom Rifle Journey

Building my own rifle was not just a project; it was a year-long adventure that taught me a lot. I remember the excitement when I first decided to start. Where do you even begin? The question loomed large in my mind.

A Year-Long Process

Over the year, I immersed myself in research. I read articles, watched videos, and chatted with experts. Each step was a learning experience. In a way, it felt like assembling a puzzle—finding each piece was just as satisfying as putting them together.

Finding Components

Next, there was the quest for components. I needed to find parts that truly fit my vision. When I found the perfect barrel or the right scope, it was like a small victory. I often asked myself, Will this part enhance my shooting experience? It was important to ensure that everything worked harmoniously. Below are some of the components I sought:

  • Rifle barrel
  • Scope
  • Trigger mechanism
  • Stock

Budgeting: Saving for the Perfect Parts

Budgeting was another crucial aspect. I had to save for each part painstakingly. It was challenging to resist impulse buys. I learned to prioritize. For instance, Do I need that fancy stock or a reliable trigger more? Every dollar counted. The thrill of saving up made it all the more rewarding.

In those moments when I felt tempted to overspend, I reminded myself—patience pays off. Eventually, as the parts arrived, there was a growing sense of accomplishment. I could visualize the rifle coming together.

The Moment of Realization

And then, the day came. The day I assembled my rifle was surreal. I remember tightening the last screw, and a wave of joy washed over me. It wasn’t just a finished product; it represented a year of planning and effort. Could it be more rewarding? The moment felt almost ethereal.

As I stood back and admired my work, I also felt a sense of pride. This was *my* rifle, built with my hands, and I was ready to put it to the test. It was truly a journey worth taking.

Facing My Fears: First-Time Shooting

The Fun Side: Spoofs and Humor at the Range

Shooting can be serious stuff, right? But what if we flip the script a bit? For me, creating a comical experience while shooting turned this daunting task into an absolute blast. I mean, come on! Who says we can’t have a laugh while honing our skills?

Humor in Stressful Situations

Sometimes, we let the pressure get to us. You know that feeling of nerves creeping in as you prepare for a shot? Well, injecting humor helped ease that tension.

“Laughter is the best medicine,”

and in scenarios like these, it certainly is true.

The Spoof Video Surprise

I talked to a few long range shooters about creating this spoof video. They all encouraged me to do it, so here it is!

So the next time you head to the range, remember to keep it light. Because sometimes the best memories are the ones filled with laughter, right? And who wouldn’t want that?

Wrap-Up: Lessons and Laughs from the Day

As I sit here reflecting on my recent shooting experience, I can’t help but smile. From the moment I opened the back of the Durango, I knew I was in for a treat. The Montana landscape that I live in is breathtaking. Can you imagine a better place to test my shooting skills?

The Balance of Nerves and Joy

My heart raced as I prepared to take that first shot. I mean, hitting a target at 20 feet is actually harder to plan than you think. Could I even get the barrel low enough to shoot and be safe?

What I Learned About Myself and Shooting

This experience taught me a lot about not taking things seriously. I work hard to bring content that everyone can learn from. But having fun is just as important.

I managed to create something from scratch—a rifle that was as much mine as the skills I’ve developed over time.

Plus, it’s rewarding to see hard work pay off.

Encouragement for Others to Take Risks and Have Fun

We often hold ourselves back. The idea of failure can be daunting. But let me tell you, it’s okay to take risks. Look at my attempt to shoot into the dirt intentionally—I thought it would lighten the mood, and it did! If you can find joy in the process, even if things don’t go as planned, you’ll always have a good time.

So, next time you have the opportunity to try something new, go for it! You might just find laughter and lessons waiting for you. After all, life is about those little moments that make the ride worthwhile. Let’s embrace the adventure and remind ourselves to have fun along the way!
