Tactaload Flash 5: Ultimate Ammo Shotgun Storage Solution

In this video

When it comes to storing extra rounds on a shotgun, most shooters default to the side saddle—a classic but sometimes clunky solution. However, what if there were a better, faster, and more ergonomic way to carry spare shells?

That’s where the Tactaload Flash 5 comes in. This innovative stock integrates ammo storage directly into the buttstock, keeping your extra shells secure, accessible, and ready for action.

This post is based on an episode of Extreme DIY Gunsmithing, where I tested and installed the Flash 5 on the Mossberg 500. Check out the full DIY build, The Home Rumbler here.

Why the Flash 5 is a Game-Changer

For decades, shotgun owners have relied on side saddles or bandoliers to carry extra rounds. While functional, these options often come with significant drawbacks:

Side saddles can be bulky, affecting balance and handling.
Elastic shell holders wear out over time, losing retention.
Chest rigs and belts are great for high-volume shooting but can be overkill for home defense.

The Tactaload Flash 5 solves these issues by integrating shell storage into the buttstock, keeping everything streamlined and balanced.

Holds 5 extra rounds (hence the name Flash 5!)
Compatible with multiple shell sizes (2 ¾”, 3”, and even 3 ½” shells)
Quick access – Just pull, twist, and load
No side saddle bulk – Keeps your shotgun slim and maneuverable

(See how I installed it on my Mossberg 500 in The Home Rumbler build.)

How the Flash 5 Works

The Flash 5’s loading system is simple yet effective:

1️⃣ Insert your extra shells into the stock with brass facing forward (yes, forward!).
2️⃣ When needed, pull a shell straight out, twist slightly, and drop it into the receiver.
3️⃣ Boom—you’re reloaded and ready.

Installation is Easy

Installing the Flash 5 is straightforward.

🔧 Use the included long Allen wrench to attach the stock to your shotgun’s receiver.
🔩 Reassemble the shotgun’s internals—and you’re done.

(If you can put together IKEA furniture without leftover screws, you can install this stock.)

Custom Fit: Adjustable Length of Pull & Tactical Options

One of the best features of the Flash 5 is its customizability.

🔹 Need a shorter stock? Use the Tactical Butt Pad to reduce the length by an inch.
🔹 Prefer a longer stock? Add the length of pull spacers (½” each) to extend it up to 14.5 inches.

For those with longer arms (like me at 6’2”), the spacers make a huge difference in comfort and control.

Compatibility: Will It Fit My Shotgun?

The Flash 5 is available for two of the most popular pump-action shotguns:

🔹 Mossberg 500/590 Series (also fits Maverick 88 and similar Mossberg models)
🔹 Remington 870

If you own either of these shotguns, the Flash 5 is a drop-in upgrade that enhances both storage and handling.

Range Test: How Does It Perform?

After installing the Flash 5 on my Mossberg 500, I took it to the range to see if it lived up to the hype.

🚀 Quick Summary of Performance:
Smooth loading – Once I got the hang of pulling and twisting the shells, reloading was fast and effortless.
Ergonomic design – No awkward fumbling or struggling to grab shells like with a side saddle.
Rock-solid retention – Even after repeated recoil, shells stayed secure in the stock.

It does take a little practice to develop muscle memory, but after a few drills, it felt natural.

Final Verdict: Is the Tactaload Flash 5 Worth It?

💥 Absolutely. If you own a Mossberg 500, Maverick 88, or Remington 870, the Flash 5 is a must-have upgrade.

Better weight distribution than a side saddle
Faster and smoother reloads
Customizable length of pull
Works with all 12-gauge shell sizes
