I have stared at revolvers in the safe and wondered whether the rust under the grip is cosmetic or a warning. You have probably done the same. That hesitation is what deferred maintenance feels like before you even touch a wrench. I picked this one out of a Montana estate sale and it arrived with the kind of deferred maintenance that comes from hard backcountry carry. The barrel nut was damaged from prior pliers use, the bore had lead fouling, and the shroud would not budge. Every screw fought back. There is something humbling about cleaning a gun that probably out-hunted you; this revolver likely saw more elk than I have. If you have got a large-frame wheelgun that has been sitting long enough to grow personality, this is the deep clean that brings it back to life.

Before You Start
Open the cylinder and verify every chamber is empty. Look, then feel with a finger. Remove all ammunition from the bench. Work over a white towel on a firm surface. Every screw on this revolver is small enough to vanish into carpet.
What You Will See Before You Start
What you will see before you start: A revolver that looks worse than it is. Surface rust under the grip. Carbon baked onto the hammer and trigger. Lead fouling in the bore that the patches will fight. The barrel nut may be rounded from prior pliers use. The shroud may not want to move. This is normal for a gun that has been carried hard and cleaned little.
Stop and Call a Gunsmith If
STOP & CALL A GUNSMITH IF: The bore has cracks, pitting, or bulging. The frame threads are damaged. The crane has endshake you can feel with your thumb. The cylinder does not rotate smoothly. These are not cleaning problems. These are structural problems.
Required Tools
- Bit driver with 0.050, 5/32, 5/64, 3/32 hex bits — Grip screws, sight screws, mainspring retaining screw — Fix It Sticks AR Field Armorer's Toolkit
- 9/64 brass punch, 1/16 roll pin punch, 3/16 brass punch — Hammer pivot, roll pins, trigger guard latch — Wheeler Tools Brass Punch Set
- Bore cleaning cable with brushes and patches — Bore fouling removal (reusable up to 6 times) — OTIS Elite Universal Gun Cleaning Kit
- 3/8-16 by 9 inch bolt with washers — Internal tool for seized barrel nut removal — Hardware store — plain steel, double-nutted
- 0.006 inch feeler gauge — Barrel gap setting (max acceptable; 0.004-0.005 preferred) — Any precision set — not blade-type

Pro Tip
Pro Tip: A small parts tray with compartments is not optional on this job. The hammer strut pivot pin, firing pin retaining pin, and mainspring guide are all small enough to roll off a towel and into a heating vent. I use a silicone baking mat with raised edges. It is cheaper than replacing lost pins.
Procedure
Prepare
Phase 1: Prepare the Workspace and Clean the Bore
Lay out a white towel to catch small parts. Verify the revolver is unloaded. Check the bore with a bore light. Lead fouling is expected, but cracks or pitting mean this barrel is a wall hanger, not a project. While you have the light in, check the forcing cone for heavy leading or erosion. Either one means this barrel needs more than just cleaning.
Clean
Clean the Bore
Run a bore brush through 10 to 15 passes, then patch until the patches come out grey instead of black. The patches can be reused up to 6 times by shifting them to a fresh hole on the rod.
What It Looks Like
Normal: <strong>What it looks like:</strong> The first patches come out black. That is normal. After 10 to 15 brush passes, they should shift to grey. If they stay black, the fouling is baked on and you need more solvent soak time or a stronger brush. If the bore light shows pitting or cracks in the rifling, stop now.
Clean Enough?
Normal: <strong>Clean enough? Yes →</strong> Patches are coming out grey, not black. The bore light shows clean rifling with no pitting. Move to Phase 2.
Abnormal: <strong>No →</strong> Patches still black, or bore light shows pitting/cracks. Soak longer with solvent, brush more, or call a gunsmith if the barrel is damaged.
Pro Tip
Pro Tip: A bronze brush is usually enough. Steel brushes are aggressive and can damage the bore if you get overzealous. Nylon brushes are too soft for heavy lead fouling. Bronze is the middle ground that works.
Phase 2: Remove the Barrel Nut and Shroud
If the barrel nut is rounded, normal removal is impossible. Build an internal tool from a 3/8-16 by 9 inch bolt, double-nutted at the rear, with a trimmed copper washer and Teflon tape (not electrical tape — adhesive residue transfers to the bore). Feed penetrating oil into the barrel/frame junction from the chamber side and let it soak for a couple of days. Apply controlled heat to the frame (not the barrel) to expand the frame threads. Tap the shroud free with a brass punch, then turn the barrel out from inside using a wrench on the bolt head. Clean thread debris with a brass or nylon pick. Never hardened steel.
Expected result: <strong>Barrel nut free? Yes →</strong> Clean the threads with a brass pick, inspect for damage, and set the barrel and shroud aside for ultrasonic cleaning. Move to Phase 3.
Stop / escalate: <strong>No →</strong> Apply more penetrating oil. Wait another day. Try gentle heat again. If the nut still will not move, the threads may be damaged or the nut may be cross-threaded. Call a gunsmith.
What You Will See
Normal: <strong>What you will see:</strong> The barrel nut may be chewed up from prior pliers use. The shroud may be fused to the barrel from carbon and rust. When you finally break it free, carbon will fall out in chunks. The threads under the nut will be dirty but should be intact. If the threads are damaged, that is a gunsmith problem.
Warning
WARNING: Do not apply heat directly to the barrel. Heat the frame only. The frame expands into the barrel threads, loosening the joint. Heating the barrel tightens it further. Also, Teflon tape has no adhesive. Electrical tape does. Adhesive residue in a barrel bore is a problem you do not want.
Front Sight
A 0.050 Allen bit loosens the screw. Rock the sight rearward and lift it out. Rust underneath explains a rough sight picture.
Rear Sight
Wear eye protection. Drive the roll pin with a 1/16 roll pin punch above the cylinder. Hold the sight down. Springs underneath will launch the detent if you slip. Remove the flathead elevation screw, then the blade with a 0.050 bit.
Grip
The 5/32 bit may encounter rust on the screw head. The grip slides off the tang once the screw is free.
Hammer
Hold the trigger back and drive the pivot pin with a 9/64 brass punch. Rock the hammer out. To disassemble: drive the strut pivot pin with a 1/16 punch, remove the strut, plunger, and spring. Reassembly requires controlling trigger position while seating the hammer or the geometry will not line up.
Expected result: <strong>All parts moving freely? Yes →</strong> Lay parts on the towel in order of removal. Move to Phase 4.
If this fails: <strong>No →</strong> If a screw is seized, soak it with penetrating oil. Do not force it. A broken screw in a sight dovetail is a gunsmith repair.
What You Will See
Normal: <strong>What you will see:</strong> Rust under the front sight. Carbon baked onto the rear sight base. Grip screw threads with surface corrosion. The hammer face will be dark with carbon from thousands of primer strikes. The strut spring may be set-short from age.
Pro Tip
Pro Tip: When removing the rear sight, put your non-dominant hand over the sight as a shield. The detent spring has enough energy to launch a small part across the room. I have found them in the carpet two days later.
Trigger Guard
Depress the latch with a 3/16 brass punch and rock the guard forward. The hand, connector, and spring are loose immediately. Do not let them drop. Drive the trigger pivot with a 3/32 punch. On reassembly, use a rubber band to hold the hand and connector in place until the guard locks.
Crane and Cylinder
Remove the crane lock. Unscrew the ejector rod. It is left-hand threaded, so turn it clockwise to loosen. Turn it the wrong way and you risk snapping the rod or damaging the crane threads. Lift the extractor and pull the crane. The bolt plunger and spring come out. The ejector rod bushing and spring can be assembled either way, but the bushing side must go into the crane first. Reversing it will cause the ejector to stick open.
Expected result: <strong>Crane removed without damage? Yes →</strong> Check endshake with your thumb. If it is minimal, clean and continue. Move to Phase 5.
Stop / escalate: <strong>No →</strong> If the ejector rod is seized or the crane has visible damage, stop. Forcing it will make it worse. A gunsmith has the fixtures to hold the crane while applying torque.
What You Will See
Normal: <strong>What you will see:</strong> The trigger group will be coated in carbon and old lubricant. The crane may have endshake — side-to-side play — that you can feel by wiggling the closed cylinder. Some endshake is normal. Excess endshake means the crane yoke is worn or the frame recess is enlarged. That is a gunsmith problem, not a cleaning problem. The ejector rod threads may have old Loctite or carbon locking them.
Warning
WARNING: The ejector rod is left-hand threaded. Clockwise to loosen. I have seen people snap rods by turning them the wrong way. The rod is not expensive. The crane it threads into is. Take the time to remember which way to turn.
Phase 5: Remove Frame Internals
Wear eye protection. The cylinder alignment ball comes out as a set: ball, spring, screw. The firing pin requires the cylinder to be open. Drive the retaining pin with a 1/16 punch, then drive the firing pin out from the rear with a 9/64 punch and remove the bushing. Remove the mainspring retaining screw with a 5/64 bit, control the guide with pliers, and lift the spring out carefully.
Expected result: <strong>All internals removed? Yes →</strong> Everything is on the towel in order. Time for the ultrasonic bath. Move to Phase 6.
If this fails: <strong>No →</strong> If a pin is stuck, tap gently with a brass punch. Do not hammer. If the firing pin retaining pin will not move, soak it with penetrating oil. Never drill or grind.
What You Will See
Normal: <strong>What you will see:</strong> The alignment ball channel will have carbon and old oil. The firing pin channel will have primer residue. The mainspring will be longer than you expect and under more tension. The retaining screw is small and easy to strip. Use a proper bit driver, not a multi-tip that does not seat fully.
Pro Tip
Pro Tip: When removing the mainspring, wrap the guide with a rag and grip it with smooth-jaw pliers. The spring is under tension and will try to launch the guide at your face. The rag prevents marring and gives you control.
Phase 6: Ultrasonic Cleaning
Put the barrel, shroud, sights, and small parts through an ultrasonic bath with a firearms-specific solution. Avoid ammonia-based or highly alkaline solvents on blued steel. Dry every hole and channel immediately. Trapped solution will rust overnight.
Warning
WARNING: An ultrasonic cleaner strips carbon in places you cannot reach, but skip drying and rust forms in channels you cannot see. Compressed air is your friend here. Blow out every hole, channel, and thread. Then blow them out again.
Pro Tip
Pro Tip: The Lyman Power Pro Turbosonic 3L handles a complete revolver breakdown in one batch. If you are cleaning without an ultrasonic, expect to spend three times as long with brushes and solvent. The ultrasonic is not optional for a deep clean. It is the difference between clean and actually clean.
Inspect
Inspect the Cleaned Components
Expected result: <strong>Parts clean and fully dry? Yes →</strong> Apply corrosion inhibitor to all metal surfaces. Lay parts out in reassembly order. Move to Phase 7.
If this fails: <strong>No →></strong> Re-run the ultrasonic cycle. Check stubborn areas with a brass pick. If parts still show carbon after two cycles, they need mechanical scrubbing, not more ultrasonic time.
Cleaned Component Condition
Normal: <strong>What you will see:</strong> The solution turns grey or black within minutes. Carbon lifts out of places you cannot reach with a brush. The barrel threads will look clean for the first time in years. The shroud interior will show its original finish. Small parts will come out looking new.
Lubricate
Protect the Cleaned Components
After drying, protect everything with corrosion inhibitor.

Reassemble
Phase 7: Reassemble and Set the Barrel Gap
Frame internals first: alignment ball, firing pin, mainspring. Then crane and cylinder, trigger group, hammer, sights, and grip. When installing the grip screw, dry fire the revolver while tightening. If the mainspring binds, you will feel a dead trigger; back the screw off slightly and try again. Check that the crane closes with no side-to-side wobble. Excess play means endshake or crane alignment issues requiring a gunsmith.
Set the Barrel Gap
Thread the barrel almost to the cylinder. Install the shroud so the roll pin mates with the hole at the frame joint with no gap. Install the new barrel nut with castle grooves forward. Do not cross-thread. Snug with the Dan Wesson barrel nut wrench. Not overly tight, just snug.
Barrel Gap
Specification: Slide a 0.006 inch feeler gauge between the barrel face and the cylinder. This is the maximum acceptable gap.
Source: Many gunsmiths prefer 0.004 to 0.005 inch for .44 Magnum.
Function Check
Final Cleaning and Verification
Brush the bore 10 to 15 times, run wet patches until clean, one wet lubricant patch through the bore, and a microfiber wipe on the exterior. Verify cylinder rotation, trigger reset, and crane lockup. Bore sight before range trip. You will need to re-zero after this level of disassembly.
Expected result: <strong>Revolver functions correctly? Yes →</strong> You are done. Store it properly or take it to the range for re-zero. The gun is now actually clean.
If this fails: <strong>No →</strong> If the trigger is dead, the mainspring is binding. Back the grip screw off. If the cylinder hangs, check the extractor assembly. If the crane wobbles, endshake needs professional attention.
What You Will See
Normal: <strong>What you will see:</strong> The trigger should reset crisply after each dry-fire. The cylinder should rotate smoothly with no hitch. The crane should close with a satisfying click and no wobble. The barrel nut should be snug but not torqued like a lug nut. The gap should feel right — not tight enough to drag, not loose enough to rattle.
Pro Tip
Pro Tip: There is no sweet spot you can feel with a torque wrench for the grip screw. You have to listen to the trigger reset while you tighten. Also, tightening the grip screw too far binds the mainspring; too loose and the grip shifts under recoil. Dry fire while tightening. When the trigger clicks, stop.
When to Stop and Call a Gunsmith
I will not claim this is the only way to do it. I can only tell you what worked on a revolver that had been through harsh Montana backcountry carry and deferred maintenance. If you are comfortable with roll pins, spring tension, and thread geometry, this is a project that leaves you with a gun you actually trust. If the frame threads are damaged, or you do not own a set of brass punches yet, send it to a gunsmith. Some damage requires a trained eye, not a can of Eezox and optimism.
Stop Now If You See Any of These
STOP NOW IF YOU SEE ANY OF THESE:
- Cracks or pitting in the bore or forcing cone
- Damaged frame threads
- Cylinder endshake you can feel with your thumb
- Broken ejector rod or damaged crane threads
- Loose mainspring guide or cracked retaining screw
- Any part that does not go back together smoothly
These are structural problems, not cleaning problems. A gunsmith has the fixtures, gauges, and experience to fix them correctly.
