I’ve held rifles up to the light at gun shows, squinting down the barrel like everyone else. Is the rifling still good? Any rust hiding in there? I was still just guessing, and that was the problem.

The hardware itself is straightforward. You get USB-A, micro-USB, and USB-C adapters in the box, so it plugs directly into Android phones or your laptop. There’s a dial on the cable that adjusts the LED brightness, and a button to snap photos through whatever app you’re using. The light adjustment actually matters; I found myself tweaking it constantly depending on the barrel’s condition and how reflective the surfaces were. Too bright and you blow out the image, too dim and you’re staring into a black hole.
Here’s where things get complicated. The EndoSnake comes with a mirror attachment that’s supposed to give you that coveted 90-degree view of the lands and grooves. The problem is it only works on .40 caliber and larger. I tried forcing it down a .308 barrel and a 30-06, and it absolutely would not fit. For rifle owners, that’s a major limitation. You’re stuck looking straight down the barrel, not sideways at the rifling. The attachment clips are also finicky; they will pop off in tight barrels, which is exactly when you need them most stable. There are hook and magnet attachments too for fishing metallic objects out of tight spaces, though I didn’t need them for this test.
If you’re on iOS, budget another twenty-five dollars for the WiFi box. Apple keeps their connectors locked down tight, so the workaround is a battery-powered WiFi transmitter that your iPhone connects to wirelessly. Android users get the simpler plug-and-play experience.
I started with an AR-10 chambered in .308, feeding the probe through the muzzle. Moving slowly is harder than it sounds. Twist the cable even slightly and your orientation goes sideways; you really never know which way is up once you’re rotating inside the barrel. But the AR-10 looked solid. Some lint had collected in there, and I spotted minor copper fouling on the lands, but overall the barrel was in pretty good shape. I even found the gas port location, which was useful confirmation of what I suspected about the rifle’s construction.
The M1 Garand told a very different story. This rifle has been sitting in my safe, and I’d been wondering about its condition. The EndoSnake revealed significant rust throughout the barrel, almost like frosting on the metal. The rifling looked degraded, and it became clear this rifle is probably looking at a re-barrel job sometime in its future. I don’t shoot it often, maybe once every few years, but seeing that level of corrosion up close changed my plans. I could fire-lap it to clean things up a bit, but there’s not much rifling left to save. Now I’m in preservation mode, keeping that rust from spreading further.

This gun had been neglected at the back of a safe, and the inspection confirmed what I feared: it needs serious attention before it’s safe to fire. The leading was so thick it was practically obscuring the bore, and combined with the rust, this rifle needs significant attention before it’s range-ready. I could see surface rust on the outside of the barrel too, which matched what the camera was showing internally.
The Dan Wesson .357 from my childhood presented a mixed picture. Most of the barrel looked fine, but there was concentrated leading right at the beginning of the barrel, deep enough that I could probably scrape it off with a pick. There were also some scratches visible, which might be from cleaning brushes dragging residue around. It had been a year or two since I’d fired it, and this inspection reminded me that regular maintenance matters, even for guns you think are clean.
The real outlier was a Beretta 1915 that’s approximately 105 years old. This is my wife’s collector piece, not a shooter, chambered in 9mm Glisenti. For its age, the barrel was in awesome shape. Minimal rust on the breech face, decent rifling, and nothing that screamed danger. We’d only fired it a few times when she first acquired it, just to confirm it worked, but seeing the internal condition through the EndoSnake validated our decision to preserve it rather than shoot it regularly.

Professional gunsmiths will want something higher-end that can actually inspect rifling from the side.
Buy this if you’re a hobbyist, a classic firearms collector, or someone who wants to verify their cleaning regimen is actually working. Skip it if you’re doing professional bore inspections where you need to see the rifling profile at an angle, or if you primarily own rifles smaller than .40 caliber and were counting on that mirror attachment. The waterproofing is a nice bonus; you can drop this thing down a drain to check for clogs, which just adds to the utility around the house.
For fifty-five bucks, the EndoSnake gives you the confidence to know what’s actually happening in those barrels you’ve been squinting at for years. That’s a deal that’s hard to beat.
